New Cheapism Research Finds Affordable Wedding Dresses for Brides-to-Be

A new buying guide by Cheapism.com, a review site dedicated to finding quality, low-cost products, points brides-to-be to the best places to shop for cheap wedding dresses. Nordstrom and J. Crew earn top billing for offering high-quality gowns at affordable prices, both online and off. Nordstrom currently showcases 14 gowns and numerous short dresses under $500 on its website, while J. Crew’s collection includes 10 styles. Bloomingdale’s, another good choice, offers 28 dresses priced under $500.
Wedding dress reviews indicate that brides want quality fabric and construction, service that's attentive without being pushy, and clean gowns to try on in stores. Reviewers say Nordstrom offers modern, sophisticated dresses, while J. Crew features wedding dresses made of high quality material in classic and flattering silhouettes.
In Nordstrom’s 18 stores with wedding suites, patient and cheery bridal staff are referred to as truly helpful and earn top marks from brides. Most reviewers report good experiences with J. Crew’s bridal department staff; the collection is available in 11 stores around the country, including a dedicated bridal boutique in Manhattan.
All of the top picks sell wedding dresses online, as well as in stores. Bloomingdale’s online wedding shop includes looks for bridesmaids, mothers of the bride, and other wedding events. The department store advertises free standard shipping if you spend $150 or more, as does J. Crew on orders of $175 or more, and all bridal dresses qualify. Nordstrom’s website offers free shipping and free return shipping (if necessary). All three provide the option to return a dress to a store. Cheapism recommends that brides shopping online buy only from reputable vendors to avoid stressful complications.
Prominent national chain David’s Bridal sells many budget dresses, but brides posting reviews resent the store’s high fees for wedding dress alterations, which can be pricier than the gown itself. Reports of uncourteous and inattentive service also keep David’s Bridal from making Cheapism’s list.
